Press relese February 10th 2010
Updated
On: Feb 17, 2010 (22:19:00)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE It is understandable that due to current economic conditions, the city is exploring ways to reduce the FY2011 budget. One of the plans being explored is the outsourcing of the Fire Departments' Emergency Medical Services Division. Local 73 understands that this is only an idea at this time; however, implementation of this plan would result in a significant reduction in the consistency and quality of life saving care currently being provided to the citizens and visitors of our great city. The city of St. Louis' Fire Department Paramedics' and EMTs' are highly regarded as the most experienced and capable providers in the area. Our members respond to over 70,000 calls annually, transporting tens of thousands of people to area Emergency Rooms. The negative impact on public safety that would occur if this plan is implemented would not only me measured in dollars, but in lives lost. The International Association of Firefighters is steadfast in it's support of Fire Department based Emergency Medical Services' as the most efficient and responsive business model. Nationwide the fire service is the largest provider of EMS services, safely and effectively transporting millions of injured and ill people.
