Election results statement
On behalf of St. Louis Firefighters Local 73, I’d like to congratulate Aldermen Megan-Ellyia Green, Scott Ogilvie, and Larry Arnowitz on their reelections; and Alderman-elect Cara Spencer on achieving her new post on the board. It was truly a pleasure to support these dynamic candidates. Likewise, it was a pleasure supporting candidates Chelsea Merta and Kevin McKinney as well. Read More...

Supreme Court Decision

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Today the Missouri Supreme Court announced it would not hear the appeal entered by the Firemen’s Retirement System (FRS) regarding, what we feel are unjust and unwarranted cuts to the retirement benefits of our members.

While we thank the court for its consideration, we are certainly disappointed. We are, however, not surprised. A decision in this case would have had far-reaching implications.

Since actions were initially taken to force firefighters (some with over 19 years of service) into a new, hastily created retirement scheme, FRS has rebounded completely and is, by far, outperforming the new scheme. This also comes as no surprise. As a solid retirement system, the FRS has successfully weathered many market downturns.

While this outcome isn’t what we’d prefer, firefighters are often faced with difficult situations. So, we will continue as we always have. We will hold our heads high, manning our posts and providing the safety net the City of St. Louis has entrusted us to maintain.

As an organization, this local will continue to support our members who often risk much on behalf of our citizens. By working with our elected officials, who share in the responsibility to our citizens, we can both protect the city and ensure fairness toward our members.

Respectfully,
